Please note: Instruction is suitable if you are new to a Bellydance class, even if you have taken other similar styles of dance or are born into the Arab culture. You will benefit if you are at a Beginner/Intermediate level of skill but have not previously studied the Arabesque technique.

In this course you will be led on a fascinating journey, experiencing a new way of connecting with your body and the rich ancient culture of the Middle East. Discover the fundamental basics of Bellydance movement that set it apart from all other dance forms. Steeped in history and acclaimed for its beauty, belly dance is also fun and an excellent exercise. After learning to isolate individual muscles in different parts of the body, at different rhythms simultaneously, you will explore the wide range of styles and steps in this rich art form. Bellydancing is renowned for elevating one's self esteem and one's appreciation of their body through the intricate and powerful technique. To further enrich the Bellydance experience, you will explore the wide variety of exciting dance styles from Egypt to Saudi Arabia, from the mysterious veiled women of the Gulf to the bold Bedouins of the Sahara, from the sailors of the Suez Canal to the fierce fighters of Upper Egypt and from the prostitute to the glorious Diva Bellydancer in Cairo. Much class time is dedicated to fun and vigorous movement but you will also be introduced to the history and culture of Bellydance through video and lecture. Props such as the veil, finger cymbals and cane will be taught in this course as well. There will be a $25 material fee payable to the instructor.

Belly Dance & Middle Eastern Folklore #2 - July 25-29, 2011

Please note: This course is not suitable for beginners. Instruction is suited to those who have previously studied with an Arabesque instructor or have many years of training elsewhere. You would be at an appropriate level of skill if you have mastered all aspects of the instructional video, "Belly Dance Movement Foundation" by Yasmina Ramzy.

This course will challenge you with a higher level of difficulty in technique and choreography. Further refinement of steps, transitions, and execution are discovered, as well as connecting with your own creativity. Video and lecture presentations will be more interactive. Some class time will be dedicated to comprehending and identifying different styles of Arabic music. Further exploration of the emotional character of the Bellydancer and the folklore characters will also be included. There will be a $25 material fee payable to the instructor.
